ABSTRACT

After the submission of a first draft, a new phase of dramaturgical development begins involving the director and the actors more in the process. There are usually workshops to have the play read, to evaluate it and make revisions. Then, during rehearsals for production, further changes are made. Part of the process of development in rehearsal is ensuring that everyone understands the historical basis for the play. This chapter denotes the more specialized practices and techniques used to foster inclusive understanding of the cast and creative team. Examples include: creating research packets for the actors that are in digital form and include a bibliography that labels research by subject matter and also has brief descriptions of the books. There is also the creation of an annotated version of the production script which cites sources for information in scenes for easy reference during rehearsal. The process of rehearsal and the participation of playwright, director, dramaturg and actors is also covered.
