ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to present the specific nature of urban agriculture in cities of the Global North and Global South. This chapter is based on an analysis of previously published research by other authors and focuses on key subjects tackled therein. Furthermore, it presents the results of field observations carried out by the author in various cities of the described regions. On the basis of the conclusions drawn by researchers from the Global North and Global South, it is possible to identify the main problems with how urban agriculture functions in completely different environmental, socioeconomic or political conditions, as well as to draw attention to common denominators in research on this subject. The first part of this chapter presents issues discussed in the context of the Global South, divided into three areas: Latin America, South, East and Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The second part discusses the subject matter of research in cities of the Global North.
