ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to convey confidence that builds credibility in you as the first responder. The authors review the history of healing with words. The Kansas Experiment conducted by psychologist and psychiatrist M. Erik Wright is discussed as a landmark study of how ambulance personnel can use hypnotic communication to positively impact patient outcomes. A detailed description of how words influence healing is offered. A reminder is offered on how body language is a big part of the communication process. The authors offer situations and examples of communication strategies used so that the reader knows the kinds of words and directives to use in an emergency. A true/false quiz at the end of the chapter offers an opportunity to review the concepts introduced. The communication techniques are offered as an opportunity to facilitate the healing process only as an adjunct to support standard medical treatments. This focus allows anyone to augment their approach to include hypnotic communication while simultaneously performing the tasks of patient treatment.
