ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how a first responder should set expectations while working with a patient on the scene of an emergency. The mnemonic CREDIBLE, used throughout the book, is applied to help understand the process used in hypnotic communication. The third letter of this word is the letter E, standing for expectation. The principles that show a first responder how to build proper expectations are discussed including the importance of how to make suggestions and guide the patient’s imagery. An exercise at the end of the chapter offers thinking questions related to the chapter material. The communication techniques are offered as an opportunity to facilitate the healing process only as an adjunct to support standard medical treatments. This focus allows anyone to augment their approach to include hypnotic communication while simultaneously performing the tasks of patient treatment.
