ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a short history of the main rating systems, PEGI and ESRB, used in the UK, Europe, and North America. In addition, it provides information on four recognized and reliable game review sites with extensive game databases, AskAboutGames, TamingGaming, Common Sense Media, and Pixelkin and identifies which include accessibility and diversity in their reviews and ratings. It notes difficulties in comparing rating systems as they are culturally based and do not take children's physical capacities or skills into consideration (ESRB in particular), and it provides examples of how ratings can be misleading.
