ABSTRACT

In 1862, a court martial sitting in the Mediterranean convicted Lt. George John Armitage of taking indecent liberties with subordinate officers from HMS Malacca. He was sentenced to be dismissed from the navy with disgrace. Back in England, Armitage later brought perjury charges against one of his accusers. Extensive press coverage of this case, R v Heane (or Hearne, 1864), uncovered many details of the affair for newspaper readers. This report, from Reynolds’s Newspaper, gives insight into the case and events after the court martial trial. 1
