ABSTRACT

This chapter describes dangers to the analyst and the analysand when a psychoanalytic process veers into destructive territory and constellates what is described as the negative coniunctio. One example is when the analysis is overtaken by the dynamic of sadomasochism, and another is when it becomes an envious pairing. In both cases, it is very difficult for the analyst to recognize and then extricate herself from the powerful grips of that energy field. Brief clinical examples are included as well as countertransference phenomena. Two films, Secretary and The Night Porter, are also discussed to amplify the themes.
