ABSTRACT

In considering the problems involved in separation and how they were dealt with by families, it seemed likely that there might be considerable differences between those in prison for the first time and those who had served one or more sentences in an adult penal institution. The penal system classifies men into a number of classes: ‘stars’, ‘ordinaries’, corrective trainees, and preventive detainees. At the actual time of selecting the men it was found that in almost all cases the number of civil prisoners was insufficient to meet the requirements of the original sample design, since it was considered essential that they had a minimum of seven days to serve in order to allow time to visit their families before discharge.
