ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to analyze the content of the curricula of the College of Shariah and Islamic Studies in Kuwait. It will discuss the curricula of Shariah programs at Kuwait University before addressing the knowledge production and doctoral and master theses issued by the Faculty of Shariah. It will unfold the problem of the curriculum fluctuating between strict textual fiqh (often Salafi) and traditional fiqh, which lacks the implementation of the high objectives of Shariah and ijtihad (independent reasoning) in general. A special focus is on the analysis of the course on Shariah politics. Although the College of Shariah considers itself a “safety valve in society, in maintaining moderation and rejecting extremism in religion,” this Shariah politics course theorizes, consciously or unconsciously, the same as what the radical jihadi trend proclaimed.
