ABSTRACT

Whenever pornography is mentioned ears are pricked. It promises something stirring and exciting, whether enjoyable or repulsive, reputable or obscene, harmless or corrupting. From one point of view the assertion is tautological; that is, we might define pornography as erotic material whether visual or verbal that is believed to have a corrupting influence, rightly or wrongly in the event. On the hypothesis that pornography does in fact corrupt we would of course expect to find that not every person who delights in pornography committed a corrupt act, but only a proportion of them. Pornography is a part of the varied and complicated erotic life of man. In the majority of pornographic pictures the phallus predominates, whether directly, as the penis, or symbolically as pubic hair in the female; pictures of the female pudendum are usually found to be less sexually exciting.
