ABSTRACT

The agreement among the more popular dictionaries that pornography means ‘licentious painting or writing’ left us with the additional word ‘licentious’ to clarify. There is agreement that pornography appeals to the solitary in man, or at least in ostensibly decent and ‘civilized’ man. A preoccupation with pornography, by isolating sensitive and intelligent men from those not so preoccupied, devalues many a personality and, in effect, robs society of many a gifted member. Pornography is the attempt to insult sex, to do dirt on it. Mr Gorer’s assertion is supported by what has happened since the passing of the Obscene Publications Act, 1959. The Act designedly made it easier for the police to prosecute in cases of real pornography.
