ABSTRACT

The term ‘consent’ is often associated with sex, but it’s much broader than that. It relates to permission and how to show respect for ourselves and for other people. It also includes how to set boundaries, communicate effectively and display empathy. Children need to learn they have a choice in how they react, so when they’re older they don’t resort to blaming someone else’s behaviour for their actions. Negotiation and compromise are important parts of consent and relationships, but the peoples should always be okay with the outcome of the negotiation. Negotiation when used with empathy, compassion and active listening skills is one of the most effective tools in healthy relationships.
