ABSTRACT

Arena Stage goes from strength to strength under Zelda’s continued leadership, with the help of a team of young directors who eventually all go on to run theaters themselves. But she appears to have little interest in the work of other women directors, who are finally overcoming years of prejudice and becoming much more of a presence in other non-profit theaters. And although Zelda produces some plays by Black writers, issues of diversity and inclusion have not been seriously on her radar since her “failed experiment” of 1968, even as they are being addressed creatively in other non-profit theaters and on a national basis with the Non-Traditional Casting Project. Narrators include Casey Biggs, Kim Staunton, David Toney, Sharon Ott, and Emily Mann.
