Introduction

This chapter starts from the similar structure between families and the state in ancient China and extends to the similarities between syntactic and discourse structures from a dependency perspective. Section 1.2 introduces the notion of dependency in general. Section 1.3 turns to the main differences between dependency grammars and constituency/phrase-structure grammars. Relations and Rhetorical Structure Theory are discussed in Section 1.4.
