ABSTRACT
Bath in 1770 was in the high summer of its fashionable heyday. The two Woods were rebuilding the city in the classical manner, and had already laid out many of its charming squares and streets. It was becoming a sophisticated town of beautiful houses, its streets and squares not adorned with trees but having fine large spaces, cobbled and enhanced with obelisks or some central classical decoration.
