When Mathews returned to Wales, he discovered that the reputation he had garnered in Bath had followed him, and he found himself universally shunned. It was said that apologies could be a proof of courage or they could be proof of cowardice, and Mathews’ neighbours were inclined to take the view that his apology proved his fear.
