ABSTRACT

As so often with the doings of Sheridan, his actions in the next part of the story are cloaked in mystery. There were rumours that, although he had kept his promise to his father not to see Eliza or communicate with her, he had in fact been slipping up to London and hearing her sing at Drury Lane – even, it was said, dressing up as a hackney coachman in order to drive her home after the performance – which is certainly in keeping with his dashing character and his lifelong liking for practical jokes and japes.
