ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses how the collapse of the20th century’s economic system changed the role of the presidency and allowed presidents to assume a change agent role in the economy. In sum, this chapter shows 1) how history disrupt the plans of the Framers, 2) the limitation of their clampdown strategy, 3) how the invention of permanent entitlements changed the image of the two-party system, and 4) how the Great Depression changed the nation’s economy and led to the loss of isolationism forever.
