ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 links the expansion of the presidency role to the growth of the high-profile White House staff to assist the president in economic matters, and the growing international role. In sum, this chapter 1) summarizes the invention of presidential staff and how it compromised the singularity of the office, 2) explains the growing tendency of the staff to explain presidential action, and 3) explores how certain aides have become a critical part of presidential expansion and history.
