ABSTRACT

This chapter provides details about the data, corpus, and analytical procedures. The chapter first introduces the data sourced from the 2016 Summer Davos Forum in China, which is established as a particular ‘multi-voiced’ site of ideological contestations. The second part combines ideology, as a higher-level concept, with Appraisal theory with a view to operationalising the quantitative and qualitative analyses using the corpus-based critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach. The third part discusses the relevant contextual properties that could condition interpreters’ reconstruction of discourse. This chapter also illustrates the ways in which the relevant theories, concepts, and methods (introduced in Chapters 2 and 3) are integrated and converted into analytical procedures at an operational level, which can inform future empirical studies.
