ABSTRACT

This chapter is the first data-analysis chapter and considers the corpus in its entirety. This chapter maps out the global, quantitative patterns that prepare the ground for and provide a useful guide to the subsequent chapters that contain more focused, granular analyses. Quantitative corpus methods are integrated into the Appraisal systems using a source-text–target-text comparative lens. Quantitative differences in rendering three categories of appraisal meaning are reported, together with the topics revealed by the keyness function of corpus techniques. The results in this chapter inform the following chapters. The main value of this chapter is methodological and heuristic, as it provides useful quantitative methods and procedures that can potentially benefit translation and interpreting research with varied focuses.
