ABSTRACT

The aim is to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of the development, significance, and impact of mass communication in modern society. The chapter begins with a timeline of the evolution of human communication from the origins of speech to the advent of the internet’ in 1989. It discusses definitions and types of communication, including mediated and unmediated, intrapersonal and interpersonal, small group, group, and mass communication, while addressing components and barriers.

The effect of technological advancements on mass communication is explored and its role in shaping message development and dissemination highlighted. Communication models, from traditional linear (e.g., Laswell’s, Shannon Weaver’s) to contemporary models (e.g., transactional, interactive, Ritual), reveal insights into complexities and dynamics.

The evolution of the media industry, enabled by mass communication, is examined through message types and essential functions. An overview of diverse media channels facilitating mass communication is also provided.

By establishing a solid foundation, “Mass Communication for Beginners” enables readers to grasp the historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of mass communication. It sets the stage for subsequent chapters that delve into areas related to the radio industry, a manifestation of mass communication.
