ABSTRACT

A key feature of Chinese grammar is how words acquire a precise grammatical function depending on their position in the sentence. This is developed in this chapter considering the topic–comment structure and how the diverse constituents are arranged around the noun phrase and the verbal phrase. Additionally, the use of grammatical markers such as de 的, (the most frequent term in Chinese) are explained. The exposition encompasses not just the arrangement but also the placement of adverbs, coverbs, terms of comparison, time and place expressions, postpositions, conjunctions both within words and sentences, and markers for interrogative and modal clauses. This elucidation introduces prevalent functions observed within the topic or subtopic, as well as those that constitute elements of the comment. Within the realm of the Chinese language, both order and position hold paramount significance in discerning the grammatical role of each word within a particular context.
