ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Murty defines “crisis” as a “situation the contradictions and incongruities of which cannot be resolved without bringing about changes which will lead to a new social order.” He reminds us that philosophy should not be severed from social and political issues facing India. Planning and development involve questions like, “What is a good life?” and “What is justice?” Philosophers must work with social scientists, scientists and experts in technology to develop a “clear concept” of development. It is not enough to point to the good life; philosophers must provide the necessary means to achieve it, such as moral education, and work toward finding nonviolent and non-authoritarian ways of ensuring that it results in moral living.
