ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by introducing the field of cognitive literary criticism, which provides the epistemological framework of the following theory of interactive narrative time. After outlining the enactivist approach to cognition and previous research in cognitive science on how our brains create our subjective experience of time, the chapter will then give an overview of how cognitive science is used in studies of narrative time, and various debates regarding the interaction of these two fields. The conclusions, from cognitive and literary theory, of this review are used to form an index of interactive narrative time, discussed in the final section.
