ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the sources of motivation and inspiration for the writings of Achebe and Beti, both of whom embarked on a project of deconstructing the traditional stereotyped African images in European cultural texts, and reconstructing Africa/ns with their own interventions. Thus, it locates both authors in the tradition of resistance in contemporary African literature. What Joseph Conrad and Joyce Cary mean and why they matter for Achebe and Beti are respectively discussed. Finally, in light of their oeuvres, this chapter focuses on the common and different aspects of both authors with respect to their subject matter, writing style and authorial intentions.
