ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the influences of Christianity and missionaries on the writings of Achebe and Beti, among other Sub-Saharan African writers. By referring to their biographies, it is maintained that both authors appropriated to some extent European cultural norms, values and ways of expression owing to their mission education and contact with missionaries. In particular, it is sought answers to the questions of how did mission education contribute to the formation of their literary career? How did they morph from the good converts into the efficient critics of mission education? On the other hand, this chapter also exposes that both authors could not entirely disentangle themselves from European influences particularly in their ways of depicting native people and culture.
