ABSTRACT

This chapter presents and explains the key important rites of communal ancestor through a photographic journey. After rebuilding the lineage ancestral house, the Ke lineage organized a communal ancestor worship in the late 1980s that involved three important rites that were conducted and performed by the lineage members and their descendants to honour the ancestors. The lineage communal ancestor worship is a private celebration involving only members of the same surname group. However, during the different rites, villagers from the surrounding villages also actively joined in the celebration. The photographic journey starts with the welcoming of the Diaspora Chinese by the schoolchildren. It shows the lineage ancestral house, the rites of recalling the ancestral soul, the ritual cleansing of the ancestral spirits, the positioning of the ancestral souls in the lineage ancestral house, and the rites of ancestor worship that include the Rite of Gratification for the Completion of the Genealogy and the Rite of Gratification for the Flow of Descendants.
