ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that there are three main payoffs of practicing radical civility. First, radical civility allows us to repair the social fabric and thus reduce polarization and animosity. Second, radical civility opens up the possibility for change, both social and political. Third, radical civility is the path to the deepest forms of inclusion. The implications of following the principles, the process, and the practices of radical civility are that the social fabric underpinning democratic life can be rebuilt and the democratic experiment can be saved. The results of adhering to radically civil approaches to communication are evident even in the hardest, most intractable cases.
