ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with details about study area Azamgarh city. This chapter has been divided into two sections. The first section deals with geographical and other characteristics of study area Azamgarh city, while the second section deals with identification and mapping of different neighbourhoods in Azamgarh city. In the first section, origin and evolution in medieval, British and modern period; physical setting in terms of site and situation, drainage, soil, climate; demographic setting in terms of population growth, literacy level and sex ratio, occupational structure as well land use pattern in the city are discussed in detail. It has been found that Azamgarh city is a medium-sized city situated in the fertile land of middle Ganga Plain in north India. The city comprises an area of 12.71 km2 nearly half is used for residential purposes and rest for commercial, industrial, transport, public utility, administrative, recreational and parks and open spaces. City has a total population of 110,983. There are 25 wards and 16,294 households in the city (Census of India, 2011). Azamgarh city has an average literacy rate of 75.51%, close to national average, i.e. 74.37% and more than state average, i.e. 67.68%. In the second section, first of all criteria selected for identification of different neighbourhoods like (i) income-wise dominance, (ii) population density and (iii) household density are discussed. Following these criteria, all 25 administrative wards of Azamgarh city are grouped into 7 neighbourhoods. The resultant seven neighbourhoods are High-Income and High-Density Neighbourhood (HI/HD), High-Income and Medium-Density Neighbourhood (HI/MD), High-Income and Low-Density Neighbourhood (HI/LD), Medium-Income and High-Density Neighbourhoods (MI/HD), Medium-Income and Low-Density Neighbourhood (MI/LD), Low-Income and High-Density Neighbourhood (MI/LD) and Low-Income and Medium-Density Neighbourhood (LI/MD). Further, details about each neighbourhood, along with its picture are discussed.
