ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 begins with a discussion of ideodynamic healing, the relationships between ideas and physiological responses of the body. A history of ideodynamic healing starting with Mesmer is provided. The hypnotic concepts of state-bound memory perspective, Erickson’s utilization perspective, and the use of ideomotor signals during a hypnotic trance are discussed. A case example of ideodynamic healing with ego state therapy is described and viewed as ego-strengthening because it expands conscious-unconscious complementarity, increases unconscious mastery, and promotes integration. Jung’s theories of active imagination are explored and described as ego-strengthening. Other imagery and imagination techniques involving the metaphor of a “hidden observer” are described including Rossman’s Inner Advisor, the Internal Self Helper, and the Center Core. These techniques are seen as ego-strengthening in allowing patients to have a mastery experience as well as accessing resources and information from the unconscious mind.
