ABSTRACT

The chapter introduces the concept of time distortion through hypnosis, starting with the early work in this area by Milton Erickson. Within the context of accessing resources from the unconscious mind that can be ego-strengthening, the authors describe various techniques of age regression including structured positive age regression, unstructured positive age regression, revivification of positive memory and mastery experiences, and recalling and revivifying nurturing figures from the past. Case studies give examples of hypnotic scripts for these techniques. The nature and establishment of ideomotor signals is discussed for use of ideomotor activation of positive progressions into the future and ideomotor activation of age regression. Activation of positive age regression of ego states is also demonstrated. Hypnotic age progressions that are projective and evocative are listed including structured and unstructured age progressions with mental rehearsal and end result imagery. The age progression techniques of Erickson, Dolan, Torem, and Napier are portrayed. The chapter ends with a complete description of the Phillips and Frederick model of age progression illustrated with case examples.
