ABSTRACT

Students with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum, are entitled by law to equal access, not just to educational programs but to all services, facilities, and activities at their college or university. This chapter discusses the ways that various campus services and activities can comply with the legal requirements by providing appropriate accommodations and services that will support autistic students in becoming full participants in university life. One of the factors that students and their parents should consider when they are deciding which college to attend is the services that are available to students with disabilities. Autistic students may be especially reluctant to identify themselves as having a disability. A student’s adviser plays a critical role throughout their academic career. Strengths-based advising emphasizes the positive aspects of students’ skill sets.
