ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by examining the leadership development opportunities that can be found in various formal and informal programs and situations. It discusses the various learning styles exhibited by the presidents in this study, focusing on the specific ways in which different leaders learn. Several researchers have examined the pathways to the president’s office in universities and in community colleges. Because moving to a new institution is often necessary if one is to achieve the presidency, career planning and timing is important. Individuals are motivated to seek the presidency for a variety of reasons. Community college leadership development occurs in a variety of ways, some formal, some informal. The chapter concludes with an examination of how reflecting on one’s experience can transform simple leadership models into more complex multidimensional models that allow for greater flexibility and a wider range of ideas, solutions, and tactics for leading contemporary community colleges.
