ABSTRACT

A variety of challenges face sitting leaders, potential leaders, and institutions as they prepare for the high levels of openings anticipated in the next decade in the leadership ranks in the nation’s community colleges. From a multidimensional perspective, communication provides a mechanism that enacts a number of leadership skills. The flexibility of the multidimensional model provides a dynamic means of thinking about leadership at community colleges. Key to understanding multidimensional leadership is accepting the premise that there is no single way for successful leaders to operate on campus. The propositions presented provide the framework for the multidimensional leadership model. Historically, career trajectories leading to the presidency began in the faculty ranks and progressed through positions as department chair, dean, and vice president. Several resources can help individuals and institutions engage in or support community college leadership development.
