ABSTRACT

This chapter provides additional help for writing outcome statements and introduces the connection between an outcome and a potential test question. The templates are mainly designed to help when the people are thinking of possible test questions as they develop test items to measure outcome statements. The question templates presented in the chapter are grouped by key words. There is typically some confusion about the interpretation of recognize and identify when used in an outcome statement. Describe and explain are listed as outcomes in the question templates, but it helps to have a clearer understanding of the intent of these outcomes when applying the templates. Some of the templates will be more specific to the measurement of literal and factual knowledge, and others are better for addressing a higher level of difficulty, such as interpretive and inferential skills.
