ABSTRACT

The Contingent Labor Conditions Score is a rating tool to gauge the conditions that contingent faculty experience at their institution of higher education. The material and social equity grades are calculated without using a survey instrument, whereas half of the professional equity grade is based on surveying contingent faculty members. This chapter offers an overview of the tool and discusses the methodology used to design it. Beyond pay equity, another way to improve basic material conditions for contingent faculty is to offer some measure of job security. The Contingent Labor Conditions Score takes into account opportunities for growth, from on-campus training or mentorship programs to funds for association memberships and conference participation. Professional identity extends to issues of collegiality and respect from the noncontingent members of the department.
