ABSTRACT

This chapter explores strategies to support students with engagement in flexible courses. Readers will identify engagement challenges that students experience when participating in different course modalities. They will review how to facilitate connections among students across modalities. They will appreciate the need to keep students informed via regular announcements. Readers will explore techniques to maintain student motivation in flexible classes. They will also prepare to recommend strategies that improve students’ time management and self-directed learning skills. This chapter’s case story shares how Dr. Natalie Muñoz has created a rubric to help her students understand what engagement means in her flexible course. In this chapter’s activities, readers will create an announcement schedule and templates, outline motivation strategies, and identify how they will support students.
