ABSTRACT

This chapter explores managing flexible engagement by preparing as much as possible in advance, plotting the time it takes to complete different activities, and practicing different strategies to improve over time. Readers will review a “run of show” document that breaks down a class meeting, one activity at a time. They will investigate strategies for facilitating student engagement in multimodal environments. They also will explore strategies for monitoring student progress or helping students monitor their progress across course delivery methods. This chapter’s case story shares how Dr. Tolu Noah supports teachers as they design engagement activities for flexible courses. The case story includes a checklist for creating interactive online learning tasks. In this chapter’s activity, readers will create a run of show document to outline a class meeting. This lesson plan reduces a teacher’s cognitive load by planning the sequence and timing of activities for a flexible class meeting.
