ABSTRACT

This chapter describes methods to make course structure more flexible and to communicate what flexibility means for your students. Making learning outcomes more flexible may involve removing language that creates barriers, taking a Universal Design for Learning approach to writing outcomes, reviewing outcomes with flexibility factors in mind, or reviewing outcomes with specific student populations in mind. Updating the course syllabus includes making the syllabus itself more flexible and communicating how flexibility might affect students as they complete a course. This chapter’s case story describes how William Hardaway uses a syllabus rubric to support instructors who want to be equitable as they teach flexible courses. In this chapter’s activity, readers will review their course’s learning outcomes and, as appropriate, rewrite any that can be made more flexible.
