ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how to prepare students to succeed in flexible courses. Preparation strategies include clearly explaining your flexibility strategies, using assignments to foster greater student responsibility, and providing early opportunities for students to practice engaging in flexible course experiences. Students can support you and their classmates by adopting small roles that help bridge communication gaps across course modalities. Supporting students can take many forms, including asking students what resources they need and creating space for students to connect with classmates. This chapter’s case story tells how Dr. Laurette Foster helps faculty support their students by fostering a sense of belonging as they complete flexible courses. In this chapter’s activity, readers will create a list of resources, tutorials, and support units that students can use to be more successful in a flexible course.
