ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the various roles of leadership in partnerships and highlights contributions of the various actors at different levels and stages of partnership development. An individual process of evaluating multiple partnering opportunities rather than merely joining others in more of a happenstance manner also drives the type of partnership that emerges. The chapter describes how the various levels of leadership interact within the partnership model and how the roles of leaders shift over the course of partnership development. Collaborative leadership supports the notion of champions and underscores the roles and responsibilities of leaders throughout partnerships and partner organizations. The chapter explores the interaction of leaders using a collaborative leadership model and specifically identifies and discusses the role of the champion in partnerships. It discusses collaborative leadership and its role in adaptive change. Leaders play a critical role in identifying when second-order change is needed.
