ABSTRACT

To improve retention, persistence, and success of students, “the actions of faculty and staff are recognized as key variables”. Additionally, more and more of students will also be first generation, have low socioeconomic status, and be academically unprepared. This chapter provides basic building blocks for accomplishing goals as well as considering “why” doing so is essential for the retention and success of students. It includes resources to assist in this task. Having a positive classroom climate, in addition to the institution’s welcoming climate, is of utmost importance “because of clear evidence that it affects performance, health, the extent to which potential is developed, and talent expressed”. Top researchers Tinto and Astin consider integration and involvement, respectively, to be key ingredients for increasing retention and promoting success. Study after study has confirmed the impact of open and inclusive classroom environments and the enhanced learning that comes with it.
