ABSTRACT

Reading assignments of textbooks, journal articles, and novels are ubiquitous in the college and university landscape. This chapter explore several ways the teachers can encourage their students to read and help them become critical and reflective thinkers. There are steps that professors can take to increase the chances that everyone will have the required texts for in-class and out-of-class use. First, when picking out a textbook, consider the cost. Second, the teachers can allow students to buy an earlier edition of the text. Third, many low-income, first-generation, and other students are relying on student loans, and if their loans or financial aid has not arrived as the semester begins, they will put off buying books. Hobson notes that “a commitment to reading is one of the essential tools necessary for higher order thought, rational action, and fulfillment”.
