ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates how the people can assign writing tasks in courses in order to promote learning and engagement and also help students improve their writing skills and critical thinking. It addresses how to deal with student procrastination for major writing projects, how to avoid plagiarism, and strategies the people can use to help their students evaluate sources that they use when writing term or research papers. Many students will put forth more attention, time, and effort in their writing assignments once they hear from the reader that the people value writing. Low-stakes writing assignments also help prepare students for answering the open-ended questions on exams. In addition to in-class writings, assigning short papers to be completed outside of class (homework) is effective for promoting learning and improving writing skills. For short or long papers, plagiarism and having appropriate sources are two major concerns that many professors have when they assign a paper.
