ABSTRACT

Design thinking is actually a process that when carried out well looks a lot more like doing than thinking. The design thinking process has several stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Some design thinking resources place a strong emphasis on the latter stages of design thinking, where solutions are designed. Design thinking is an iterative process that continues over time to ensure that solutions generated are desirable to students and meet their needs, but also to ensure their feasibility and viability within the context where they are implemented. A design thinking process begins with a research question— something that loosely defines the problem to be solved or question to be answered. Design thinking is both a method and a mindset. Teams embarking on design thinking for the first time should be prepared for a mindset shift. Successful design thinking requires asking the great questions.
