ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the benefits and rewards of engaging in SoTL as well as the need for SoTL. It spends some time reviewing the standards of SoTL so that the authors have a sense of how rigorous this work must be. The chapter briefly reviews the steps of doing SoTL and how the book can help the readers complete a SoTL project from start to finish. It is probably clear by now that reflecting on your teaching and students’ learning improves teaching and learning. First, without empirical evidence, the authors cannot be sure that anything they do in the classroom is effective. Sure, they have exam scores and student papers and presentations to which they assign grades, so they know how students are performing in their classes.
