ABSTRACT

This chapter covers topics as why it is valuable to know about data analysis, basic concepts in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and involvement of students in step of the research process. It is divided into two main sections, each covers basic concepts of qualitative and quantitative data analysis. If the reader's research design is qualitative (descriptive, case study, observation, interview, or focus group), then they will need to rely on qualitative data analysis procedures. The types of data collected in case studies, observations, interviews, and focus groups are textual and will need to be subjected to some type of narrative analysis. Narrative analysis is typically referred to as content analysis. To help the readers start thinking about how to prepare their data for analysis, describe what format (e.g., interviews, surveys, essays, exams) their data are currently in and what they will do to transform them into data that can be analyzed (i.e., transcripts, numbers).
