ABSTRACT

While team-teaching the course, the authors developed and systematically evaluated several new and different classroom activities. After collecting some very preliminary data on the success of their activities, they presented their initial findings at a local conference—the Association of University Regional Campuses of Ohio. McKinney suggests that within the academy, the phrase “going public” generally means presentations and publications. However, McKinney points out that going public can also include websites, shared portfolios, performance, and juried shows. She highlights that the value of each of these venues is socially constructed and that such value changes over time. Value is defined by the discipline and by the institution. Many SoTL conferences and disciplinary conferences have poster sessions for work that is interesting and relevant but may not be ready for formal presentation or publication.
