ABSTRACT

This chapter help the readers figure out their level of engagement in SoTL by acquainting them with the literature on the value and reputation of SoTL, the reward structure of SoTL, practical challenges of doing SoTL, and practices that departments and institutions can adopt to make SoTL a better supported scholarly endeavor. An interesting paradox is that all institutions of higher education value excellent teaching, but often fail to demonstrate its value and importance. This is especially the case at small liberal arts colleges and community colleges, where often any form of scholarship is not valued. In addition to promotion and tenure, there are some practical issues to consider before starting a SoTL project. In a study of faculty members who received small grants to support a SoTL project, McKinney and Jarvis found several reasons why faculty had difficulty applying the results of their SoTL projects.
